In East and Southeast Asia, it has been associated with protection, balance, and well-being. In South Asia, it appears in food and remedies as a sign of nourishment and warmth. In Europe, it travelled through homes as a guardian spice, tucked into cupboards to protect what was stored. In parts of Africa, star shapes have long symbolised direction, ancestry, and trust in inner knowing. In the Americas, star anise found its way into comforting kitchen remedies. Across Oceania, star symbols echo navigation—reading signs, trusting rhythms, finding one’s way gently.

At Sunshine Masala Witch, we chose star anise because it reflects how we see the world. We believe magic is practical. It lives in healing, curiosity, and the joy of noticing small things. In rituals that calm rather than impress. In symbols that invite reflection instead of explanation.
